Black Rhino Game Lodge

Pilanesberg, South Africa

Virgin rating

The hotel

It may feel a million miles from anywhere, sitting at the foot of an old volcanic crater and hidden among Tamboti trees, but this Pilanesberg National Park pad is actually just a few hours’ drive from Jo’burg and 33km from the fun of Sun City. Its location makes it the ideal lodge for families, first-time safari seekers, and those wanting to mix game drives with Sun City’s attractions. Its handy setting doesn’t mean you’ll miss out on the safari experience though, with this malaria-free game reserve home to the famous Big Five and other photo album-favourites, and Black Rhino Game Lodge overlooking a popular wildlife-attracting waterhole.

Rooms were beautiful. Restaurant had great food and good service. Each meal was a buffet. The game drives were a disappointment. A mad 40 minute drive to get into Pilanesberg was not pleasant. The constant communication on the radios took away from the peacefulness of being in the bush.

Our guide Clifford was fantastic, worked really hard to show us everything and share such great knowledge. We would highly recommend to anyone! Read less

The guides were friendly and knowledgable, and despite the heavy drought we saw plenty of life on 3 of the 4 game drives. Because of the drought, the lodge surroundings looked a bit bare, but this is not something they can control (without wasting valuable water for gardening). The lodge was styled in a fun safari-chique way, and at some point a family of elephants even walked passed the main building, which was the highlight of our stay. Read less

Black Rhino is a small game lodge on the northern edge of the Pilanesberg reserve. Our accommodations were excellent, as was the service from a friendly and well trained staff. Game drives in open vehicles are a big part of the experience, and there's lots to see, with radio links allowing drivers to get to the "must have" sightings.
