While walking through the lobby, I was stopped by his playing. Listening, I was impressed by the innovations he used in familiar selections, e.g. Beatles and Earth Wind and Fire. Frank played great arrangements that avoided sing-a-longs, and his thoughtful improvisation increased my appreciation of each melody.
One evening I was stopped again, listening to something beautiful that I had never heard. I waited for his next interlude to ask about it. When he told me he said that it was made famous by a singer. I privately thought, “That music was extraordinary without a singer.” The next day I researched “Sinful Passion” by Dimash. I learned that the singer was more than equal to the task; I played it three times.
The point is that I would never have been introduced to the song or the singer because the singer was from Uzbekistan, nor would the people that I know, (the first person I sent the information to is a professional musician}.
El Senor May, a Mexican, spread his musical knowledge to other countries, by playing in the lobby of The Vine. Who would have guessed?
