Nusa Dua Beach Hotel and Spa - Handwritten Collection

Nusa Dua, Bali

Virgin rating

The hotel

Living up to its ‘authentically Bali’ mantra, Nusa Dua Beach Hotel and Spa - Handwritten Collection feels like a reincarnated Balinese palace. Every element’s lavish, with its three exquisite tree-fringed pools, sumptuous spa, gym, and seven bars and restaurants all adding to the fantastical feel. But nothing’s quite as regal as its grounds, where tropical greenery spills over balconies, tumbles through gardens, and comes to rest on the pure white sands of its beach. The effect’s a serene setting for garden tours, coconut leaf weaving, and traditional dance classes – and for Gecko Club’s child-focused island experiences. Inside its nine hectares, a dramatic temple-like structure splits to reveal an elaborate lily pond festooned with water features; Balinese guest rooms (including Butler-served Club rooms) divulge garden, pool, or beach scenes; and the incredible bamboo web of its double-decked brasserie opens up to hypnotic Indian Ocean views.

Couple Late 40s Travelling for pleasure after a cruise Stayed late Jan 25 So the hotel and their grounds are absolutely amazing and their published commitment to the environment is admirable. The food, when it comes, is amazing but more on that later. The room we had was absolutely fantastic and I know it’s been commented on that some rooms are tired and dated but ours was great Staff are polite in the extreme and always say hello and have a smile for you. The hotel really is a five star hotel in honesty Now the reason I have only given three and not five stars, despite the above glowing review, is as follows Firstly, the service whilst polite and friendly, takes forever for anything!!! Be it a drink or a meal. Minimum 30minute waits are the norm at the lunch venues and a simple drink of water can take upwards of 15minutes to arrive and involve a cast of thousands to deliver it (1 to take the order, 1 to get it, 1 to type it in the till and then 1 to get you to sign for a bottle of water!) Secondly (maybe linked to above) is the perception that as an all inclusive (AI) guest that staff seem to run away from you, this seems to be because they have your money and nothing more can be gained. Also for AI you are hugely restricted on what you can actually have. There are usually two menus one for paying guest and one for AI guest now having used AI for nearly 20yrs I am used to paying a surcharge for high end items (filet, lobster etc) but to have two menus for the same hotel guests is something I have never seen before anywhere coupled to this is the fact no one actually explains which menu is which and what each guests gets until you order and then you’re told it’s not included and only then offered ‘your’ menu. This may be also why the serving staff dismiss you as soon as they see your AI band. Secondly, as mentioned, the service is glacier slow. Balinise culture is slow paced, I get it but on average each interaction for a meal goes as follows. Get seated (if a staff member will serve you) Wait 10 mins for a menu Wait 10mins to make a drinks order Wait another tens mins for drinks to arrive Order food Wait another 20 to 30 mins for food to arrive All this in a restaurant with more staff than diners most often Lastly their petty rules on water is absurd!!!! In a county with high 80s humidity and people sweating their backside off you can only order a glass of water in 90% of bars and restaurants and only the pool bar will give you a bottle but you then have to sign for it!!!! All other AI hotels we have stayed at you just ask, get and you’re on your way!!!! Interestingly the cynical part of me noticed the top of each check to sign was the tip!!!! All in all a lovely hotel but let down by slow, slow, slow, slow service and being treated as a second class citizen when we paid up front for AI Top Tip Pay as you go, don’t bother with AI Read less

Would I stay here again no!!! The 3 stars are for the staff. We were not told we had to prebook restaurants. Had to eat late each night as all was left. Was told to eat at the one near the beach as would see the fire show on the beach. It was on the grass as you walk down, not on the beach. Big let down on my meal it was cold. Reviewed the… Read more

Reviewed the restaurant which was outstanding. The room well definitely not what I expected! Run down, tired. First time in Bali booked pre-cruise stay through third party. Read less

We stayed a week in this lovely hotel. Stand outs for us the food, and the staff, both excellent. The good Food, we did not have a single meal (all inclusive) that was not very good or excellent. Breakfast is stand outs. The Tamarind restaurant on the beach was our favourite. Staff, exceptional. Plenty of them and so very polite . All inclusive package , very generous esp re food and drink, and you could use all the restaurants , no complaints at all. The grounds , absolutely immaculate and so relaxing to walk around . Reception, customer relations , outstanding, never a Q, always dealt with our queries to our satisfaction. Not quite so good , for us at least The main pool, it is beautiful, large too with a great swim up bar , but as many have pointed out , if you don’t sling reservation towels on before 7.30am , no hope of a sunbed. This is a real annoyance , just 35 sunbeds for hundreds of guests , they need to stop the early morning sun bed thieves, and simply work out how to get more beds in. Bedroom, nothing really wrong with it, sizeable , aircon excellent, but does not impress when you walk in, tired, needs a revamp . Bed was comfy tho. Entertainment, sparse , most evenings nothing much (piano, solo singer) at all . That said . Would we stay here again, yes most definitely for a pre or post cruise stopover Thanks to the staff and management for making our stay very pleasant indeed. Read less
