The hotel

The first island you’ll hit as you drive through the keys is Key Largo, most famous for it’s watersports with reef snorkelling, diving, and glass bottom boat tours out of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park as must-do activities. Neighbouring the state park you’ll find Playa Largo set on 14.5 acres of secluded shoreline, providing your own piece of paradise to stay whilst exploring this part of Florida’s famous archipalageo. The private beach is the only thing between you and the sparkling waters of Florida Bay, where you can enjoy a range of watersports right from the hotel as well as venturing out to nearby attractions (of which there are plenty). There is a laid-back feel to the resort, perfectly in keeping with the area, but that doesn’t stop the facilities and service being up to standard. From a beach shack restaurant to a ceviche bar, all tastebuds are catered for, La Marea is a particularly great choice for locally sourced seafood and freshly handmade artisan breads and pizzas. When you’re seeking serenity after all the activity, book in at Ocean Spa where you can try specially formulated scrubs using coffee grounds, sugar, and salt. The top class service doesn’t end when you get to your room, an iPad is on hand to offer on-demand services to ensure your stay is up to scratch.

We stayed at the Playa Largo resort for 10 nights in early December. Since this is the off season, the resort was uncrowded (except for a couple of weddings and business conferences) and free of almost all children. We flew into Miami and used Alexis Taxi service to get to the resort, which was a little over an hour from the airport. We certainly recommend him. We stayed in a Bay Front Corner Suite in the Marina Tower, which is in a quiet location. The room was beautiful and had two separate balconies. One night there was a wedding on the beach in front of our room, but it ended by 10 pm, so no problem. The grounds are well kept, and all the staff are friendly and helpful. Free bottled water is available at the front desk. There was also premium bottled water and snacks in the room—but an extra charge for those. We just ordered what we wanted on Amazon and had it delivered to the resort. Very simple. We didn’t use the spa, so no comment on that. The fitness center is small (it looks bigger in the pictures due to mirrors on the wall), and contains mainly cardio equipment, but there were weights and a single machine for strength training. It was more than adequate for a vacation. It’s open 24/7, which is convenient. The pool area is stunning. Because we went during off season, there were always plenty of pool chairs available and it was relatively quiet. However, there is only one pool for the entire resort (no separate adults only and family pools), so during busy vacation periods I suspect the pool is filled with children and noisy. Pool towels are readily available when you walk in, and there is also a water dispenser with plastic cups (though I just filled my water bottle). The people at the pool work hard making sure towels are available and then cleaning up at the end of the day. They also provide at no cost each night supplies for making smores around a firepit on the pool premises. Special thanks to Sandra, Peter, Luis, Gerlents and the others whose names I don’t know. The beach area is rather small, but scenic. No ocean waves because the beach faces a bay. And no long walks on the beach. Nothing like the Jersey Shore, but typical for a resort beach in the Keys. For breakfast each day we had the buffet at La Marea. Beautiful inside and on the patio, and one of the best buffets we have had at a resort. Special thanks to Paul, Greg, Judith, Winsome and Fritz. Everyone was friendly and super accommodating. For lunch each day the Sand Bar by the pool and beach was a great place to eat. Delicious food and drinks, and everybody was very accommodating. Special thanks to Edwin, Christina, and Bianca. Each day shortly before sunset there was an Eventide celebration by the Sand Bar. And there was live music in the afternoon. We especially enjoyed Matt Anderson. For dinner we tried Sol by the Sea (very scenic, but a very limited menu and nothing special) and La Marea (great service and ambiance, but food quality not always the best). Most of the time we took Ubers to local restaurants. Our favorites were Calusa in Bakers Cay resort (fine dining), The Fish House (great food) and Old Tavernier (nice Italian restaurant). Caribbean Watersports offers snorkeling, a sunset tour, and an Enviro tour. We only got to do the last one with Capt. Darrell. It was a private tour, and we saw some very interesting birds and manatees. Worthwhile. One travel tip, which I always follow: Do NOT charge anything to your room, so when you check out your bill is just for the hotel stay (and always keep a copy of your original reservation). That came in handy here because due to a computer glitch my final room charge was much higher than listed on the reservation. It was easy to straighten out because my final bill was for the room only. We had a terrific time and plan to return during off season in the future. Read less

Cons:,,pricey place and pricey daily resort fee which im.not sure what we got for that. Some misleading verbiage on their daily activities indicating included when in fact we got charged for . Water sports equipment was not included. There was a charge to get a kayak or stand up paddle board. Our room was dirty..mold on the shower door, filthy curtain, not a great cleaning job when housekeeping came. One basic TV channel (ABC) was unavailable the entire time. Read less

I rarely ever check my bill at a Marriott but upon check in another customer was arguing with front desk about charges. So I checked. Ugh! We ate at sol and at check out noticed an additional charge at the same time. They did refund a few days later but seemed unconcerned. There was also about 100 dollar charge for a points redemption that the front desk couldn’t explain and noted I had to take it up with Marriott. And expected charges that really just add up was the resort free, with two taxes applied and a parking fee again with two taxes applied. Staff were friendly and the hotel was very clean. Would I stay here again - no. Read less

I've probably stayed in over 50 hotels in my life and have never had such a miserable experience. Upon checking in our room the curtain on the window has a massive black and brown stain that was about 3 foot tall and one foot wide. Not sure how anyone cleaning the room could miss it. We checked in later in the day and after a long day of traveling we just wanted to get some sleep. The next day we went to go to the supposed "heated pool" to find out it was absolutely freezing. My two year old wanted to go in so we entertained the idea for a few minutes until she was just freezing and didn't want anything to do with it. We got back to the room to take a nap with our two year old only to hear this extremely annoying whooshing and vibrating sound through the entire room and it was extremely difficult to sleep. I thought maybe it was going to be temporary and would go away. I called the front desk and maintenance to tell them there was a terrible noise coming from somewhere and they promised they would check it out immediately. Nothing ever happened Fast forward to the next day and the sound still didn't stop at this point it's extremely frustrating because at this point we have been here multiple days the pool is still freezing and almost no guests are swimming in it because of the extremely cold temperature and the obnoxious noise can also be heard in my parents room next to ours which is a connecting room. We finally get a technician to our room to be told they are going to try and fix it. Later on they call us to say there is nothing they can do about it because it's just the fans from the rooms below and if they switch us rooms it wouldn't matter because all the rooms are going to sound like that if the room below us is running a fan. I've stayed in many hotels in my life and have never heard something that was so outrageous. How could a hotel be designed where every room has a terrible whooshing vibrating sound through the entire room if the room below is running a fan.. They said there's is no rooms available in the first floor of the entire hotel which is extremely hard to believe because this entire resort is pretty empty for having over 170 rooms. There is almost no one in the pool everyday besides maybe 1 or 2 people because it's so cold and they keep telling us the wind off the ocean is too cold that's why it can't warm up and they also said they have to reset the heater a few days ago because they were having issues with it. It's been about 70 degrees here everyday. So we go back to the noise that makes it impossible to sleep in the room they said they can offer us a different room but we won't be able to have joining rooms anymore because they are fully booked. Which seems hardly the truth by such the small amount of people are the hotel at any given time of the day. By this time when they got back to us to tell us this is was later in the evening and my daughter really needed to go to sleep. We went back in the room with the manager and the sound was gone. They radioed the technician but he wasn't responding. They then told us they probably fixed the issue. At this point I just hoped they were telling the truth and the issue was resolved. Then about 10pm hits and I'm getting ready to go to sleep the noise starts again. We earlier asked for compensation or if there was something they could do for such an inconvenience and the question was just avoided multiple times and never responded too. I own multiple businesses and never have treated customers like this. If a question is asked it's always answered but apparently that's not how it works here. I've never had such an obnoxious experience and I'm not one to complain via Google reviews. You can check my review history on my profile they are mostly all positive. I'm not the type of person to leave a bad review unless the experience is really bad. This experience has been unfortunately poor and would never recommend anyone to stay here unless your okay with loud noises that make it almost impossible to sleep and a pool that is too cold to swim in.
