Key West, Florida Keys

The hotel

Opened on New Year's Eve 1920, Casa Marina Resort is Key West’s original grand resort, and it's just been newly renovated again! Boasting a dramatic 'water walk' that leads to the resort's two largest swimming pools and the largest private beach in Key West, Casa Marina is a tranquil oasis close enough to the action of Duval Street. Offered on-site is a booking centre for world-class diving, fishing and boating, and it also has the largest fitness facility in Key West, allowing you to work off those holiday indulgences! Guest rooms here are contemporary in style with whitewashed walls, textured tile floors and dark tropical hardwoods — a great place to retire to at the end of a busy day seeing the sights. For dining the hotel’s Sun Sun restaurant and bar, an open-air wood pavilion overlooking the pools and beach, is great for those seeking a casual atmosphere and plenty of that Floridian sun!! And as if all this wasn't enough, you can take advantage of the facilities at the sister property, The Reach, just one block away.

Beautiful hotel, great staff. The location is perfect on a beautiful beach. It’s quiet, it’s lively all at the same time. Prices in the shops are reasonable. Bathroom is beautiful but super small. Casa Marina promotes itself as a high-end luxury resort and its rates are reflect that. Unfortunately the facility and its services fall woefully short. We booked four nights in an Ocean View Terrace King room at a rate of $950 a night, not including taxes and resort charges. What we found was a very large facility in need of a very big makeover. As soon as we got past the lobby we found a worn and slightly shabby old hotel. The interior elevator doors were smeared with handprints and weren't cleaned while we were there. The carpets in the halls were dirty, the walls were marked up, and the doors to the rooms that opened to outside walkways were worn from exposure to the weather. Our room was small and clean and appointed like a Holiday Inn--plastic cups and an open rod for clothing suspended next to the bed. We did something I've never done in 4 decades of travel-we changed rooms. Twice. Each room was essentially the same so we gave up and stopped at room three. Late one afternoon we decided to get room service. I tried twice to call room service but was instructed to leave a voicemail each time so I used the QR code on a card I found on the dresser and ordered a flatbread, hummus with pita, and two club sodas for a total cost of $77. The food arrived quickly...in a paper bag a la DoorDash. No cups. Warm bottles of soda with no ice. One napkin. We had to tear the lid off the pizza box the flatbread came in to make plates. On the positive side, the grounds were lovely and had the weather cooperated I'm sure we would have really enjoyed the pool and the private beach. The staff was quite pleasant and one of the managers reduced our rate by $100 a night when we moved to the room with the smaller terrace. The hotel followed up with us at the end of our stay and offered a credit of $300, but though both were nice gestures, ultimately we still paid $750 (plus a $220+ resort fee) for a very, very mediocre experience. After two days I had to report to front desk to vacuum the entire hallway. No room service for two days I was told the the staff was confused🙈. Said they didn’t understand the the door tags. I understand they are mostly french speaking…so Casa Marina perhaps send more time training your staff. Teach them by color… one color is do not disturb…. the other color can be, clean the room. Why should the guest suffer and pay and astronomical price for hotels incompetence. Very disappointing. Breakfast Buffet was good. Beach Bar staff was nice. Wedding team did an AMAZING job. Read less

Based on value. For what I paid it was a real let down. From basic amenities to over all experience it was disappointing. Old facility that has been renovated but basic services are lacking. Towels were old and worn out. One trash recepticle for the entire suite. Had a great view of back streets and tennis courts. Street noise all night. Had to request a blanket. Little things like makeup remover and a ladies shower cap missing. Only tissues are in the bathroom. For the price the details matter. No shuttle service to anywhere. Charge you a resort fee on top of room costs. Everything over priced. Menu was minimal but expensive. Read less

In my decades of travel, I have never experienced at a hotel a greater disparity between price and value. The room rate, resort fee and tax totaled approximately $1,000 per night, yet this property struggles to perform even the most basic functions in hospitality: ask guests if they need assistance with their luggage, answer calls to the front desk, staff the front desk during the day, supply the amenities covered by the resort fee, replace the towels when the rooms are turned, wait on dining guests in a timely manner, follow-up to make sure guests’ requests are addressed or answer guests’ questions about specific charges on a folio. Not a single request I made of Guest Services was handled after the first call. Some requests necessitated two or three calls and, sometimes, the involvement of a manager. It doesn’t stop there. Robes and slippers are only provided upon request. The rooms are stocked with plastic and paper cups, not glass and china. Corners are cut at every opportunity. This is a three-star hotel trying, and failing, to punch above its weight by resting on the laurels of its beachside location. And that’s why this hotel is currently 55 out of 56 on Tripadvisor’s list of Key West hotels. That Conde Nast Traveler put this hotel at the top of its Key West list is just shocking. It's is yet another example of the state of luxury today: high price, low quality. The Reach shares management with Casa Marina, so the same abominable service should be expected there. My stay at this hotel was so bad, it damaged Hilton’s reputation to the point I would only stay at a Hilton property again if it were my only option. Read less
