The house grounds are covered in all sorts of beautiful vegetation and the lovely live animals really add to the beauty. The house from the outside is gorgeous. We were running late and could not take an interior tour. The family of this house had a lot to look forward to everyday on these grounds. Fountains were everywhere and they were also… Read more

Museum: an information and collection dump. Needs a curator to organize better and provide context for some items/collections. Best part were the panels chronicling all of the plantations that used to exist. Would highly recommend turning that into a book for purchase. Carriage house: great staff and amazing food. Museum: an information and collection dump. Needs a curator to organize better and provide context for some items/collections. Best part were the panels chronicling all of the plantations that used to exist. Would highly recommend turning that into a book for purchase. Carriage house: great staff and amazing food. Gardens: beautiful to walk through and decorated lovely for Christmas. These are contemporary and were not there during the plantations heyday House tour: low end of average. Major focus of the tour is pointing out the current owners collections on display in the home. Very little around the history of the home itself/the people who owned it and essentially nothing regarding the slaves that once lived there. Was decorated beautifully for Christmas though. Gift shop: Wow. It’s big. Some unique items, but mostly over priced stuff. Worth walking around just to see the outrageous items/prices on some things. As an example, they are reselling phone charging cords that are normally 3/$20 for $30 A PIECE. If you have time to kill or are looking for a great lunch/dinner…it’s worth a stop. Read less

We had complete access to the gorgeous gardens. Tours of the house and self-guided museum are an extra cost. The house tour guide told us there were many weddings held on the grounds and the season for the weddings was about to begin. A hearty buffet breakfast at one of the restaurants, the Dixie Cafe, was included. The Dixie Cafe overlooks part of the gardens. We had a delicious dinner each night at the opulent Carriage House. The owner, Kevin Kelly, was out each day during our stay on his golf cart with his two friendly dogs. He is an amicable person who hosted an election night dinner for his friends at the Carriage House. We would highly recommend at stay at Houmas House. Read less

Interesting tour. Beautiful grounds. We visited at a very bad time. There were 5 busses of tourists from cruise ships. This really was problematic. We had a scheduled, ticketed time slot. We went to the appointed spot to meet our guide, who never showed up. They were suppose to ring a bell to alert those of us with tickets. It never happened.… Read more
Interesting tour. It never happened. Eventually we went looking for a staff member and eventually got on a tour. My advice: when booking, try to avoid time slots which will be dominated by busses of tourists from cruise ships. Ask!! We also ate lunch there. They have a very nice buffet meal. Read less
