High notes…Our room was lovely (118) as it opened onto the patio where the dip pool was located. A wonderful setting, even though it was too cold to really enjoy the setting. John, the bartender, was our other favorite part of our stay. He was knowledgeable and friendly, a perfect mix. We really enjoyed talking to him at the bar: The low point was the absence of a breakfast that was advertised. Not even a basic coffee bar available in the morning. There were Keurig type coffee machines in the rooms, but a fresher cup of coffee would be greatly appreciated in the AM. Read less

This was my first stay at the Voco St. James. I hope to make a repeat. This hotel is located on Magazine St, which turns into Decatur as you walk into the French Quarter. It's quite handy for walking into the French Quarter or to Canal Street, not too close to be noisy, but not so far that you regret your 50-year-old life choices as you walk to an attraction or just explore. We were in the original building, which is an appropriately older building--wide windows (painted shut, but there was a broad sill, no balcony), somewhat wavy wood floors, and a large bathroom. We scored a tub, but it had a glass wall/shower curtain arrangement, which required you lean creatively or be in the tub to turn on the water. I recommend getting in the tub--detachable shower head. There was a couch too, and it was comfortable. The room had a bit of that old building mustiness, but housekeeping sprayed it into submission. All of the staff were very friendly. The check in staff sit at two desks right inside the door, a very cozy set up, although I bet they get tired of people standing over them instead of using those cushy chairs. There was a check-in treat, a local confection. The building has an elevator. There's an enclosed outdoor area with tables, and it leads to the other building, but we didn't explore that. The exit stairs let out into it. There's a little cafe further into the lobby. We had breakfast, and drinks during happy hour. People seem happy to be there whether they are working or lodging; I know I enjoyed myself. In the next block is a Ruby Slipper Cafe (diner?). It is great, it's a brunch cafe, do not hesitate, but if you get up late just forget it. The lines are powerful. I think it's the mimosa flight. Or the bacon. Weaknesses of the St. James include the valet parking which is clearly priced at a punitive value, but we parked on Lasalle and got some steps in, about a 20 minute walk. The St. James does have a loading zone in front of the hotel (and Magazine is one way). I was concerned about hygiene issues in the cafe--hand to face to utensils contact, and we saw a mouse streak by and conceal itself under the counter near the coffee station (but the temps had dropped that night, which makes rodents get brave). The hand hygiene is more of a concern for me, but I didn't have any illness, so it's worth another try. Read less

Our stay at this hotel was simply amazing. The location was excellent. The room for very nice and clean, and the staff was extremely professional and helpful. Ive had a fantastic experience at Voco st James. An easy walk to anywhere, the staff are super friendly and engaged, Ricky runs the bar and front of house like a pro and nothing is too hard for these guys. Overall, the hotel and our weekend in NOLA were GREAT! However, it kind of went downhill when we checked out. We had an early flight Sunday morning and were checking out around 4:30am. As expected we were tired and just wanted to get on the road. We got off the elevator to leave/check out, and a blonde was sitting at the front desk spinning in a chair. She said loudly, "Hi, I am Sarah and I work here." My fiancé and I chuckled and my fiancé said "Hi Sarah". She then asked, "Did you actually want something?" My fiancé stated he was wanting to check out and get a copy of his receipt. She then said, "to check out you simply just have to leave, ya know". My fiancé again chuckled and said, "Umm alright, no receipt then". Then, a gentleman came out from the back and Sarah said something along the lines of she was keeping an eye on the desk for him and these people want to check out and want a receipt. Sarah then went over to the other side of the lobby where another guy was hanging out and proceeded to start singing This Girl is On Fire at the top of her lungs. Meanwhile, keep in mind, all of this is very slurred speech. The actual front desk worker was in the process of checking us out, when Sarah and the other guy from the lobby started walking out the front door. Sarah looked at my fiancé and said, "sorry, I am just a drunk girl". My fiancé again took it in stride and chuckled and said, "no worries, you are fine. I am sorry, I just don't have the energy for you" - he said this with a laugh. Sarah, then proceeded to say, "B****h, I don't have the energy for YOU. F**k you ginger boy!" Sarah and the man from the lobby both left then. We asked the front desk worker if she actually worked at the hotel and his simply said, "yes, she does" and did not say anything else about the incident. Overall, everyone else at the hotel was great. However, this behavior is unexpectable. At the end of the day, we are a younger couple who was in NOLA for a fun weekend and to a degree can laugh this off. However, my fiancé travels all the time for work and is a diamond IHG member and I worked in hotels myself for 5+ years. We both are EXTREMELY understanding but, this was just insane and beyond unprofessional. Read less
