The hotel

Remember epic film The Sound of Music about the von Trapp family and their flight from Nazi Europe? Well, this is where they landed, in Stowe, Vermont, on an enchanted farm with sweeping mountain vistas reminiscent of their beloved Austria. Still owned by the von Trapp family, their home is now a striking alpine lodge set in a magnificent outdoor playground. If you’re holidaying in winter you can enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides and there is superb skiing nearby, with the 3-mile trip by snowshoe or cross country skis to the charming Slayton Pasture Cabin for hot chocolate definitely worth the effort in the winter months. In summer, there’s hiking in the mountains, cycling, horse-riding and bird watching. In fact, the list is endless. Accommodation is extremely comfortable with plenty of home-from-home comforts. Splash around in the outdoor pool when the weather’s warm or head indoors to the health centre to swim a few laps. The kids will love spending time in their very own activity centre with fishing trips on the agenda, guided hikes, scavenger hunts and good old fashioned singalongs around the campfire come sundown. Dine in style at the main restaurant, feasting on Vermont and Austrian cuisine, including speciality dish Trapp Wiener Schnitzel. The Lodge also boasts its very own brewery – sample the range whilst listening to Jazz piano.

This was our second visit after 7 years. It is simply breathtaking! It snowed on my birthday and this was the icing on the cake! The front desk staff is so friendly. The food at the lodge restaurant and the Beer Hall So fresh- so flavorful. Snow-shoeing with Annie was so much fun- you learn a lot about that bottle of syrup you must purchase to… Read more

The food at the lodge restaurant and the Beer Hall So fresh- so flavorful. Snow-shoeing with Annie was so much fun- you learn a lot about that bottle of syrup you must purchase to take home. Once is out- you will have to wait another year- liquid gold! The peppermint shower gel is so refreshing, the views are breathtaking- you forget you are in the USA! I cannot say enough about this place- it transports you to your favorite winter movie, a postcard- a wish come true! You will feel far from home- yet so close here in the US. The only and saddest part was the bakery, which I cannot tell if its even associated with the lodge anymore. I reviewed it separately- it feels neglected. The review is submitted not in a mean spirited way, but a sincere hope for improvement to honor the legacy of this gem and its rich history. As a result of this experience, I took 1 star away from overall rating for Dec 2024. I absolutely love and recommend you visit- especially at Christmas. Wishes- more trees!!! More outdoor lights!!! See separate bakery review. Thank you! Read less

We loved the food here and the history surrounding the lodge. As a family with Bavarian roots, we loved all of the traditional food here and were stuffed when we left! The service was a little slow, but friendly and responsive to some allergen issues. I definitely would return!

She was always positive, smiling and always down to help us with everything. Highly recommend this amazing place! HIGHLY! Read less

I am writing to express my frustration with the poor service and disorganization during my recent stay at Trapp Family Lodge. Unfortunately, my experience fell far short of the high standards I expected. To begin, I ordered a cheese and wine tray for my arrival, but it was never delivered. When I went to the front desk to inquire about it and to schedule a snowshoe trip to the beer hall, the staff member was clueless about the activity. At the bar, there was no staff available, and I had to wait an unreasonable amount of time. When a group finally arrived, it was complete chaos. The breakfast service was equally disappointing. By the time I arrived, most of the food was gone, and what remained was of poor quality. I again brought up the issue of the missing cheese tray at the front desk. While they acknowledged it, they assured me we were signed up for the snowshoe trip. However, when I arrived at the activities center, the staff informed me that we were not on the list, and the group had already left. I returned to the front desk, and they call the activity center the front desk was apologizing instead of addressing the issue, they sent us back to the activity center were we were handed me a map and told us to go on our own. We finally made our own way to the beer hall, which was not the experience I had hoped for. Later, when I returned for cookies and coffee, the group had taken everything, leaving nothing for other guests. This stay was marred by poor communication, inadequate service, and a lack of attention to detail. For a property with such a reputation, this was extremely disappointing. I hope management takes this feedback seriously to improve the guest experience. As far as a resort. It’s far from. Read less
