The hotel

Remember epic film The Sound of Music about the von Trapp family and their flight from Nazi Europe? Well, this is where they landed, in Stowe, Vermont, on an enchanted farm with sweeping mountain vistas reminiscent of their beloved Austria. Still owned by the von Trapp family, their home is now a striking alpine lodge set in a magnificent outdoor playground. If you’re holidaying in winter you can enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides and there is superb skiing nearby, with the 3-mile trip by snowshoe or cross country skis to the charming Slayton Pasture Cabin for hot chocolate definitely worth the effort in the winter months. In summer, there’s hiking in the mountains, cycling, horse-riding and bird watching. In fact, the list is endless. Accommodation is extremely comfortable with plenty of home-from-home comforts. Splash around in the outdoor pool when the weather’s warm or head indoors to the health centre to swim a few laps. The kids will love spending time in their very own activity centre with fishing trips on the agenda, guided hikes, scavenger hunts and good old fashioned singalongs around the campfire come sundown. Dine in style at the main restaurant, feasting on Vermont and Austrian cuisine, including speciality dish Trapp Wiener Schnitzel. The Lodge also boasts its very own brewery – sample the range whilst listening to Jazz piano.

This lodge appears to be capitalizing on its historical setting, charging a large price for the privilege of staying there, but failing in offering the common conveniences of a comparably priced facility elsewhere. I'll go somewhere else next time.

Our room was well appointed, a fabulous view, everyone working at the Trapp Lodge showed the best interest in our stay. We stayed for three days, had all meals in the dining room and felt comfortable in the quiet peace. The finest 4 star dining experience in Stowe! We had dinner the first night in the Lounge with the fireplace and the second night in the main dining room. The food was excellent. We ate lunches at the Bierhall Restaurant & Brewery and the staff was exceptional and great menu choices. Excellent fitness center which we used each morning before breakfast.. Definitely a place to vacation. The best for families as they have so many facilities and activities. They offer many tours. Read less

We had a lovely 20th anniversary trip to Stowe for two nights. The rooms were clean and neat and the bathtub included a package of aromatic salts to enhance relaxation. The one request we had was not taken care of in the time we were guests. It was to please change the very dirty air filter that was visible through the grid in the ceiling outside of the bathroom. We made two requests and neither was heeded. Along, on our Sunday checkout, the woman at the front desk was loudly talking about her frustrations, didn't ask if we'd had a nice stay, and did the minimum to check us out. She did not act like someone who understood good customer service. Also, the buffet breakfast was lackluster. Read less

Very basic motel/hotel for the relatively high price (~$720 for a room with 2 queen beds for a family of 4). Rooms were of average quality and bathroom not completely cleaned. Wifi exceptionally slow made streaming impossible. Hotel staff appeared under-resourced and overwhelmed with no on site bell service upon check-in when we arrived in the early evening around 6:40pm. Dinner menu was very limited in variety but the options we ordered were tasty. Hotel ran out of water bottles for guests so anyone wanting bottled/filtered water had to drink from bathroom sink. Not what we would have expected given the price and reputation. We will not be returning. If anyone needs an overnight stay for a ski trip, would pick a less pricey option that will likely offer an all around better experience. Read less
