The Beekman, A Thompson Hotel, by Hyatt

Financial District, New York

Virgin rating

The hotel

Built in the same decade as the Brooklyn Bridge, The Beekman had stiff competition when it came to architectural neighbours – but its glamour and grace granted it kudos with the building buffs of the 19th century – and today. This skyscraper’s kept its drama with its marble entrance, Persian rug-slung lobby, and Victorian balustrade-draped atrium, which stretches nine storeys skyward before being capped with a glass pyramid. It’s not just opulent in design though, with its ‘nothing’s-too-much-trouble’ service and dining scene mirroring its old-world splendour and new-world luxury. Two of Manhattan’s finest names are behind The Beekman’s restaurants: Tom Colicchio reinterprets old and new classics at Temple Court, while Keith McNally recreates French brasserie elegance at Augustine. Or you could join the socialites (and sometimes celebs) at The Alley Cat for cocktails and Japanese Izakaya comfort food.

Excellent location in FiDi. Great restaurant onsite Le Gratin. Great neighborhood away from the crowds in midtown. Hotel is good for families, but also for couples. I would definitely stay again. Check out Le Parisienne for breakfast nearby.

The Beekman has been in my wish list for years and it completely lived up to all my expectations! It is true old school glamour and class and has been restored so beautifully. Staff were beyond helpful and friendly and was great having a quick interaction with the bellman each morning on my way out. Perfectly positioned to the Brooklyn bridge which is a 10min walk away, city hall park, the financial district and trinity church Read less

Great hotel with one very big negative. The hotel is beautiful. The room was good sized (king suite), good bathroom, very comfortable bed. Only potential negative is there is no real closet. Great hotel with one very big negative. The hotel is beautiful. The room was good sized (king suite), good bathroom, very comfortable bed. Only potential negative is there is no real closet. There is a wardrobe but if you are staying for more than a few days, this would not work well. Front desk and door people were great. Housekeeping was excellent. The big negative is the Temple bar/Court. For breakfast, on 2 of the 3 days, service was a cluster. On one of the days, it took 40 minutes to get a coffee and more than 2 hours to have breakfast. The menu is pretty small and not very interesting. The Temple bar is too much of a scene. We tried to get a drink there on 3 occasions but could never get a table and stood at the bar twice for more than 30 minutes without getting a bartender's attention. Think this is a big minus for a high end hotel. Know if is Hyatt's "lifestyle hotel" model (having bars and restaurants attracting big local crowds) but very annoying to be staying at a hotel and not be able to get a drink at the hotels bar. Know that they aren't going to change this as it is a revenue generator but should come up with ways to keep hotel guests happy (drinks service in they lobby area for hotel guests, allow guess to reserve tables in advance, etc). Had dinner at Le Gratin and it was very good. Read less

Wonderful historical hotel with awesome service in a great location. The rooms are well appointed, quiet and comfortable. The hotel is near multiple subway lines and walking distance to 9-11 memorial and Battery Park. Absolutely no issues with the property. And they provide free coffee in the lobby during breakfast times. Here is the big negative. FHR rate includes breakfast and we even had dinner. It was simply average. I frankly expected much more from Kraft restaurants but the food and service were really disappointing. They cannot make a simple omelette without making sure the goat cheese isn't plopped on one side or burning the toast. And no manager seemed to care enough to check in. Server was overwhelmed with the 4 tables she had. Bottom line - stay here if you aren't partaking in food and enjoy the hospitality. So many great places to eat in NYC. However, if you are using FHR or Virtuoso, stay elsewhere. Sadly, even breakfast is not worth the hassle. This is a 5-star property brought down to 4 stars due to their restaurant partnership.
