The location in Times Square is convenient, but this hotel, while billing itself as five star and renovated, was significantly lacking. The experience was three star at best. One of our rooms had burn marks in the carpet and moldy shower heads. When we mentioned this, housekeeping seemed to do their best to clean the shower heads, but they really needed to be completely replaced. We eventually were able to switch rooms. In the other room, we returned one evening to find bloodstained sheets on the bed. Ick. No minibar. No spa. Stay somewhere else. Read less

Overall, we had an okay stay at the Knickerbocker but there were two major details that made for a somewhat disappointing experience. The first was reception & check in. When we checked in, there were 3 women working the check in area. All 3 seemed to be more interested in talking with each other than giving us the time of day. The woman who checked us in (sitting at the far right side of the desk) repeatedly stopped what she was doing to giggle & talk with the women sitting next to her. Not once did she ask us anything other than the very basic questions (name & license). She didn’t ask if we were visiting for a special reason—which, we were: to celebrate my birthday. She didn’t ask if we needed any assistance with our bags (3 xl suitcases & 2 carry on’s). She basically treated us like we were bothering her. She gave us our keys & we hauled our bags up to the 16th floor by ourselves. The second instance was the bed. We have stayed at numerous hotels—the bed at the Knickerbocker was hands down the most uncomfortable we have ever experienced. When I called down to reception to politely ask if housekeeping could add a mattress pad or topper to our bed, the woman responded with a “Well, I don’t know. I can call housekeeping but I don’t know if there is anything they will be able to do to help you.” With that, my husband & I just went to Target & purchased a mattress topper ourselves (we had a 6 night stay & couldn’t take another night on that bed). Housekeeping did come by later that afternoon with a foam topper, so we were extremely grateful to them for their help but so disappointed that reception wasn’t more helpful as it would have prevented us from taking time out of our trip to fix the problem ourselves. Even a simple “I’m sorry that the bed is not satisfactory” would have gone a long way. Just something to validate our feelings instead of acting like we were the only ones to ever complain about the bed being uncomfortable—which, maybe we just had a bad bed? Housekeeping, however, was truly the highlight of our stay at the Knickerbocker. They were so pleasant & helpful, & our room was always spotless. The in-room dining staff also did a phenomenal job & we so appreciated their kindness & attention to detail. We don’t regret staying at The Knick, per se, as it is truly a unique experience & our room (aside from the bed) was wonderful. However, customer service at a 5 star hotel is expected to be superior & that just wasn’t what we consistently encountered there, unfortunately. Read less

The only negative I can think of is the overnight parking. Be prepared, it is $175.00 a night. A bit overpriced in my opinion for New York City. There is cheaper parking if you want to park and walk back to the hotel, about 5 minutes away. The gentleman working outside the hotel, James, is one of the nicest people I've ever met. Super helpful and makes you feel very welcome. When we checked in we did make a comment to the person behind the desk that the valet rate was a bit high, the young gentleman looked me straight in the face and said it was due to inflation and really not that bad at all, which was a bit shocking. Other than that, it was a pleasant stay. Read less

While in Manhattan for three days of client visits, I was able to enjoy The Knickerbocker. The concierge was wonderful in making restaurant reservations, I was able to enjoy a business meeting breakfast in Charlie Palmer Steak, and in general had a wonderful stay, and the hotel location was ideal for business travel.
