Constance Moofushi

Could it really be as good as the reviews? Absolutely. The island is beautiful but the magic is created by the staff and their unobtrusive attentiveness, they know your name and nothing is too much trouble and any issues are quickly resolved. The resort has a gentle tranquility, the hard work is all done behind the scenes to make it feel effortless. From the moment you are met from the plane to the moment you leave the airport you are looked after. The friendly staff seem to attract lovely guests, self selecting for those that want friendly more rustic barefoot luxury. It creates this happy atmosphere where guests and staff chat and exchange jokes and where everyone feels like they are in the secret mofooshi happy club, silently congratulating themselves on making such a fantastic hotel choice. Holidays don’t get much better and for this reason there are a lot of repeat guests, greeted like long lost friends by the loyal staff. Comfy beach beds, well mixed cocktails and a buffet which is different every day with high quality choices. The extensive all inclusive wine list and the young sommeliers always happy to advise and please you with their suggestions. The excellent house reefs which are teaming with beautiful fish, turtles, sharks and rays. Special moments created by Hassan and his team, turned a funny mishap into a special meal on the beach which won’t be forgotten. “Come as a guest, leave as a friend” is the colleague motto at the Constance Moofushi. We spent long hours researching the best place to go in the Maldives to suit our requirements and budget. The Constance Moofushi generally came up on various lists, in the top 5 to 10, of the best places to stay as voted for by travel agents, journalists, and travellers alike. Things all got off to a good start when we arrived in Male and transferred by minibus to the seaplane terminal. The Constance hotels have their own lounge where you can relax, have food and drinks if required, and it’s just a few footsteps away from your seaplane departure. The journey to Moofushi was around 30 minutes. Travellers love the Moofushi. We met lots of people that have visited multiple times, and not just two or three, we’re talking nine, 10, 15 times. I even heard one person say, “I’m frightened to go anywhere else in the Maldives in case it isn’t as good.” The hotel is high quality but it isn’t stuffy. It is relaxed and easy going. Before we came we read about “barefoot luxury” and that you don’t need to wear shoes. I thought it was just one of those marketing things but it’s true, literally no need to wear shoes anywhere. I didn’t buy in for the first few days, I’m just not used to being barefoot all day and night. I got used to it and it’s actually lovely. Even the restaurants and bars have sand floors. The only place you need shoes is the gym. Perhaps the best thing about the hotel is the colleagues that work there. They can’t do enough for you, they are clearly well trained and capable, they’re quick and efficient, they are kind and friendly, and above all they’re knowledgeable and thoughtful. The repeat guests we met have got to know some of the people quite well and they’re all fond of each other. The hotel is extremely well kept, buildings, gardens, beaches, facilities, are all excellent. Food is varied and superb. The wine list is excellent. A team of sommeliers work the island, offering 160 wines in the all inclusive price, and a further 640 wines that are chargeable. The spa is also excellent offering a wide range of treatments. The Constance Moofushi is on the far side of South Ari Atoll and next stop west is open Indian Ocean. As a result the house reefs are close to shore, have plenty of flowing water, and are abundant with fish life. We snorkelled every day and saw turtles, reef sharks, and eagle rays, amongst a huge of other things. The resort is very peaceful pretty much at all times. The Constance is I would say mid priced for the Maldives. Even when minor things went wrong they were resolved extremely quickly. The tiny examples of things that went wrong don’t bear a mention, but the way they were resolved do. There was a minor mishap with one of our meals but the food and beverage team more than made up for it with a meal in the Alizee restaurant with a menu specific to us. The rooms are well appointed and comfortable. We stayed in the Sand Villas, number 33, which was absolutely brilliant. A view out onto open ocean less than 10 metres away, close to the Totem Bar and also close to the best beach with the boat house and water sports and also the most comfortable sun beds with big cushions. The snorkelling was great from our villa, only a 50 metres away swim to the drop off where the best reef and sea life were. The Water Villas are a longer walk to main amenities and some of the Beach Villas don’t look out onto water. Definitely worth deciding what you want before you book. All in all this is a fabulous resort. The most outstanding thing was the attentiveness and kindness of the Constance colleagues, they are all delightful and that’s reflected in the 40% of guests who are repeat customers. Read less
