Oleo Cancun Playa

The hotel

Using minimalism to maximum effect, the sculptural ice-white architecture and matching monochrome interiors of Óleo Cancún Playa give it a calm chicness that’s a far cry from the buzz and colour of your setting — right at the start of the famously vibrant Cancún Hotel Zone. The dedication to ‘white’ is only really interrupted by flashes of blue — homage to the sea and surf just steps from the hotel. Overlooking the beach, the infinity pool adds a touch more turquoise, with the pool bar’s tropical-inspired cocktails adding their own shots of colour. The styling may be minimalist, but the features aren’t. You’ve got spa treatments, complimentary WiFi, an art workshop, and restaurant menus that take you from Japan to Mexico and Peru, with stops on the way for comfort food, international favourites, and bakery treats served up with Starbucks™ coffee.

My husband and I were celebrating our honeymoon and once our waiter, Crispin, learned this he set up the most special dinner for us with a special menu. Chef Quirino cooked a delicious dinner and Ofelia made the best sushi we’ve ever had. The manager Esteban also made sure everything ran smoothly and that we had everything we needed. I would recommend this resort to anyone! 10/10! Read less

We were blown away by the quality of the resort in every sector. The food and the drinks were great but the customer service was amazing. All of the bartenders, specifically Alejandro at the lobby bar at night made our experience amazing and made us want to return again.

Oleo is so great! Only 15 minutes from the airport and on an amazing strip of the clearest and warmest water in Cancun! It is a much smaller resort - 2 pools, 3 towers, 3 restaurants (a main buffet, a Mediterranean and an Asian inspired) but the beach is literally steps away from everywhere. If you’re used to very large resorts, this will be a change, but one I do not regret! The rooms are large & very clean - great beds! But what really makes this place though is the staff! I have never been treated so well in all my years of travelling. At the pool with Abad & Roberto, Mauricio & Kevin in the main lobby, Chocolate & Rambo from the Entertainment crew, Patricia in the coffee shop, and all the waiters, bartenders & maids! Be sure to tip these hard working folks! They don’t expect it but it’s so appreciated. There isn’t entertainment like your larger resorts, but they do have singers that come in nightly and play by the bar - I believe one of them was named Louie… he is amazing! What a great entertainer! They really made the staff so special. Oleo should really be proud of their staff! I would highly recommend Oleo if you’re looking for a smaller, more relaxing vacation! Read less

Oleo I’ve been visiting Cancun one or two times a year for the last 30 years. I have been to many different resorts and I do have my favorites. However, occasionally we do like to try out a new resort based on their reviews and our budget. Our visit to the Oleo was one of those. The Oleo is a smaller resort sometimes referred to as a “boutique resort“. I will be honest, when we first arrived and saw the dated architecture of the resort I had my doubts. However, everywhere you looked every corner, every pain of glass, every surface was immaculate. The reception area was staffed by extremely helpful staff. The bellhops were very welcoming, providing water while we awaited our check-in session. Instead of standing at a counter and checking in you are seated at a desk for a pleasant conversation with Julia, our Concierge/hotel manager. I can’t express enough how pleasant and welcoming Julia’s demeanor is. From her welcoming smile and her pleasant calming voice the experience was nothing less than perfect. Following that first meeting we were welcomed with a friendly smile and a “good morning” every day when we crossed through the lobby to head for breakfast. Throughout our stay, any question or concern was immediately addressed - and with genuine concern that we were completely satisfied with the resolution. It is obvious that this atmosphere of excellent service is created and maintained by Julia and that her focus on excellent customer service permeates all staff. After we got settled in our room we were impressed, again by the cleanliness. We requested some additional clothes hangers and they were delivered immediately. We did not use room service too frequently, but when we did, the items were delivered in a reasonable time frame. Pros: One excellent feature of this resort is the glass panels. The use of glass panel barriers as opposed to standard railings throughout the hotel maximizes the beautiful view of the ocean everywhere you look. From the breakfast area to the pool area and including my own private balcony in my room! This glass is constantly being cleaned and maintained to ensure a superior view. It may seem subtle, but it really makes a difference when you can see the beautiful Caribbean sea whether sitting, standing or lounging by the pool, with no obstructions. The room was cleaned completely and sheets changed daily by 10:00am and our request for additional towels etc were met promptly. Every service person at this resort was a 10. Smiles, service, helpfulness and, again, a genuine concern that you were enjoying yourself. However there are always some people who deserve a special mention. Best margaritas at the lobby bar ! Gerry / Heraldo Nobody makes a Margarita like Gerry. He should write it down and teach all the other bartenders! He always had a smile and a kind word and, by the second or third day we didn’t even have to ask for a drink, It was just delivered. That, my friends, is considered a “luxury” experience! At the Hakka Japanese restaurant we were fortunate enough to enjoy being served by Chrispin all 3 times we were there . Chrispin is an excellent host. He recommended some selections that we never thought of trying and introduced us to a side of sushi we never thought we would have enjoyed otherwise! Thank you Chrispin. Overall, the food was good quality and we always left every meal, breakfast, lunch and dinner, satisfied. Cons: The dated architecture in need of upkeep (especially near the beach, stairs to the beach and, what appears to be a demolished beach bar on the beach just below the resort) The repetitive food choices at the restaurants could be easily remedied by introducing some variation every day. Some evening entertainment would also be a welcomed addition. Either a show, or some live music. In conclusion, I will say that, if you give this smaller resort a chance, you will find, as we did , that this resort has a “charm” to it that grows on you. When we arrived, we weren’t sure we would return. By the end of the week we were already talking about “the next time we come to Cancun we’re coming to Oleo! And we hae already booked our next stay in February 2025! We are looking forward to another excellent week at the Oleo! Read less

The staff were incredibly helpful the entire stay especially Mauricio in the lobby who answered all the questions we had upon arrival. The entertainment staff Antonio and Rambo did the best job kept it lively during the days with trivia and games by the pool. Bar staff ensured you had a drink in hand throughout the day as well. The food at Azul and Hakka was great with lots of variety however Almar wasn’t the greatest. I highly recommend Oleo if you’re looking for a smaller, intimate resort! Read less
